i hope that everyone is as excited about this as i am::
first of all a big thank you to all of you for providing information and links on the flickr page :: since this is my first bee it was all really useful :: and second since this is my first bee i hope you will all forgive me in advance if i make a mistake ::
i surfed around a bit last night and found this tutorial for a block o' strings :: i really liked it in the photos and thought just to be sure that it was what i wanted i quickly made this this morning ::
i love it :: i followed the tutorial exactly and made each square 6.5 inches , so the finished size is 12" square ( i used a 1/2 inch seam allowance) ::
so here are the deets ::
i am completly fine and would prefer if everyone would make me a block from their own stash :: i have seen many vintage sheets in blogland and know that i have only a tiny bit of what is out there :: i am hoping that if you use your own stash i will get little bits of all of those great sheets i see but don't have :: luckily this thing is made with scraps so it won't use up much if any of your favorite sheets ::
if you don't have enough scraps to make this block let me know, i will happily send you some!
when sending these to me feel free to stuff it into the smallest envelope possible to save on postage :: i have an iron and am positive any wrinkles will iron out just fine::
colorwise i will let each of you decide what you would like to make :: i'm not fussy, i'll just let you know this.... the crazier and wackier the color scheme, the better!and i am not expecting more than one block from each of you, but if you want to send me more than one i would love it.... and i will send you an extra(s) in return when your month come up!!
if i've missed anything or if you have questions, please let me know.... i usually check my email at night..... happy sewing and i can't wait to hear from you :)

I love this!! Can't wait to get going! :)
ReplyDeleteHow funny - I'm in a Bee with Rachel and I JUST TODAY sent off her completed block o' strings! It's a fun and easy block to make. The end quilt will look amazing.
ReplyDeleteI love making string blocks! This will be fun!
ReplyDeleteI just made some string blocks for The Urban Craft Center's Haiti relief raffle quilt. It was fun to do and is a great way to use scraps.
ReplyDeleteI think these will be beautiful.
Question: did you use the paper backing - and is that necessary? And do you want us to starch them too?
ReplyDeleteHi Megan,
ReplyDeleteI did use a paper backing. i read online (i don't remember where though) that using the paper backing helps to keep the stiches from stretching and bowing in the middle. i haven't tried it without the paper backing so i don't know for sure. anyone else have an opinion one way or the other?
i didn't use starch. if you like to feel free.

Well I did some sample blocks with scraps I had (without the paper backing) and I do see what you mean. I think they do stretch a little and while it looks fine, it could look better. So I will make sure and use paper on these! Looking forward to it!
